Carolyn McCrea and Allison Ling
turned in strong mound efforts to propel the New Jersey Skylanders to six straight wins and the title in the Shore
Classic National Qualifier contested over the weekend.
McCrea worked 26 2/3 innings, facing 119 batters. She fanned 29, walked only 11 and allowed seven earned runs.
Ling hurled 10 1/3 innings, facing 49 batters as she fanned 11, walked seven and surrendered only two earned runs.
In the opening game on Saturday, the Skylanders defeated the Lookouts from Pennsylvania 3-1 as Andover's Nikki
Apgar, Dawn Gilchrist of Newfoundland and Fallyn Marciano singled home runs.
It was no contest in the second game as the Sparta-based Skylanders routed the New York Panthers 23-1. Marciano
had four hits, driving in three runs while McCrea collected three hits, knocking in five runs and Tara Serpone
doubled twice to plate three runs.
In Saturday's final game, the Skylanders blanked the Sayreville Stars 13-0 as McCrea tossed a no-hitter, fanning
nine and walking one. Serpone of Sparta had three singles and a double, knocking in four runs to key the attack.
The Skylanders ended the game in style on a Sperone to Gilchrist to Ling double play.
On Saturday, the top-seeded Skylanders rallied from a 9-5 deficit in the top of the seventh to defeat the Long
Island Bandits 10-9. With two out in the bottom of the seventh, Gilchrist blasted a grand slam homer on a 2-2 pitch
to knot the game. The Skylanders pulled out the win in the ninth when Marciano singled home Sparta's Kelly McWilliams
with the game-winning tally.
It was a re-match with the Lookouts in the second game and the Skylanders came away with a 5-3 victory. The score
was knotted at 3-3 in the fifth when Serpone doubled home Gilchrist and Apgar singled in Stephanie Galliano.
Facing the second-seeded Tornadoes from Freehold in the championship game, Oak Ridge's Maria Grill powered the
Skylanders to a 7-1 victory and the tourney title when she had two singles and a triple to knock in three runs.
The victory earned the Skylanders a berth in the PONY Nationals that begin on July 24 in Sterling, Virginia. |
