Lady Spartans annex SCIL crown

Baylea Sperring went the distance as she hurled Sparta to a 2-1 victory over Jefferson as the Lady Spartans captured the Sussex County Interscholastic League regular-season title while raising their record to 20-6. Jefferson dropped to 15-8. Sperring scattered three hits while her teammates pushed both runs across the plate in the bottom of the third. Casey Roselle plated the first run and scored the winning tally. In state tournament action, Sparta upset West Milford 5-0 in the North Jersey, Section 1, Group III tourney. Sperring worked six innings, fanning three and allowing three hits against the Lady Highlanders who sported a state-high 25 wins in 30 decisions. Roselle went 2 for 4, driving in a run and scoring once while Jamie Cresbaugh singled twice and knocked in a pair of runs. Raleigh Sperring went 2 for 3 and scored a run. Pope John routed Marist/Bayonne 17-0 in a North Jersey Non-Public A encounter that was halted after four and half innings by the 10-run mercy rule. Dana Inez hurled a perfect game, striking out 11 batters while Katelyn Miele and Megan Prettyman had three hits apiece with both driving in a pair of runs. Wallkill Valley was ousted from the Group II competition when Pequannock blanked the Lady Rangers 4-0. Stephanie Romano went the distance for Wallkill Valley, allowing four hits and striking out 10. In SCIL action, Chelsea Homa tossed a one-hitter in final scholastic appearance, striking out 10 as High Point defeated Newton 3-1.

O'Brien's 0-hitter keys LVR's capture of Madison Tournament title

Shannon O'Brien's pitching gem highlighted Lenape Valley's shutout sweep to win the Madison Softball Tournament on Saturday. O'Brien tossed a no-hitter as the Lady Patriots rocked Jonathon Dayton 10-0 in a game halted after five innings by the 10-run mercy rule. Steff Secola fueled the attack, going 2 for 3 with a single and triple while scoring twice. In the second game, LVR blanked the host Dodgers as sophomore centerfield Lisa Duckles went 3 for 4, including a three-bagger, driving in three runs with Secola, a sophomore, scattering three hits, fanning three and walking one. In SCIL action, Cori Becker singled Ali Simons, who led off with a double, across the plate with the walk-off run as Jefferson edged Walkill Valley 2-1. Pope John coasted to a 10-1 triumph over Hopatcong as Sarah Olsen worked the first five innings, fanning five and walking one to record her 10th "W" in 13 decisions. Caitlin Whelan fueled the attack with a homer and two singles in four at bats, driving in four runs. Megan Prettyman singled twice in four plate appearances, knocking in two runs. High Point defeated Newton 4-1 as Morgan Bell excelled for the Wildcats. Bell not only picked up the win, scattering three hits, striking out 11 and walking none, she also singled and doubled in three official at bats, driving in a run. Sussex Tech romped to a 16-4 victory over Medford Tech in a New Jersey Vo-Tech Tournament confrontation played in East Brunswick that was halted after four and half innings by the mercy rule. Jess Gilman scattered four hits in raising her record to 9-4 as Britney Kelly singled and doubled in three official plate appearances, driving in two rubs, Caitlin Talmadge delivered an RBI double and scored twice for the Lady Mustangs.

Cresbaugh goes deep twice

Jamie Cresbaugh went deep twice, launching a pair of round-trippers as she plated all of the runs in Sparta's 4-0 blanking of High Point. Virginia Buechel and Raleigh Sperring both singled twice for the Lady Spartans while Baylea Sperring went the distance, scattering six singles, in raising her mound mark to 9-3. It was Sparta's 18th "W" against five setbacks as Cresbaugh was chosen the SCIL/Richards and Sumemrs Player of the Week. With the score knotted at 6-6, Cori Becker delivered the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the fifth as Jefferson edged Pope John 7-6. Becker went 2 for 3, knocking in three runs while Jen Pettoniu singled three times in three at bats, scoring all three times. Jackie Ubhaus was the winning pitcher. Lenape Valley blanked Newton 2-0 as Stef Secola allowed only two singles in raising her record to 4-8. Alexandra Cicchetti was 3 for 3 at the plate with a double and two singles as she drove in two runs and scored twice. Her teammate Brooke LaBell went 3 for 4 and picked up an RBI. Sarah Cullen tripled with the bases loaded to fuel a seven-run outburst in the bottom of the second as Hopatcong defeated Kittatinny 8-6. Amanda Becker and Krystle Mazza also legged out three-baggers for the Lady Chiefs while Cassie Ridge picked up her fourth win of the campaign in 14 decisions. Stephanie Romano fanned 14 to hurl Wallkill Valley to a 8-2 victory over Vernon in Hardyston. Rachel Mitchner singled and doubles three official plate appearances, driving in a pair of runs. Mary Hoaking and Stacey Kerstner both tripled for the Lady Rangers who improved to 10-9. Jess Gilman scattered six hits and whiffed eight in pitching Sussex Tech to a 4-2 triumph over Norte Dame (PA). Brittney Kelly went 2 for 3, driving in a run and scoring once while Candace Talmadge was 2 for 4 at the plate, scoring a run.

Jenn Gilman went the distance as she hurled Sussex Tech to a 9-3 victory over Burlington County Tech/Westampton in the New Jersey Vo-Tech Athletic Conference Softball Tournament on Saturday. Gilman scattered four hits, fanned six and walked two in raising her mound record to 5-3. Brittney Kelly fueled the attack with a single, double and triple in three official plate appearances, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Sofia Bosio singled three times in four at bats, crossing the plate twice and picking up an RBI as the Lady Mustangs improved to 7-6. Jefferson bridged the fifth and sixth innings with eight runs to rally to an 11-4 triumph over Hopatcong on Friday. Jackie Ubhaus remained unbeaten, picking up her fifth "W" in relief as she fanned eight and walked one. Brittany Beckman and Jenna Pettoni went deep, blasting round-trippers while Beckman also doubled. Cori Becker legged out a three-bagger and collected a pair of singles to knock in four runs while Allyssa Rowan tripled. Chelsea Homa allowed only one hit as Newton blanked Vernon 6-0. The frosh fanned 11 as her teammates made the most of one hit, scoring six unearned runs on four Lady Viking miscues. Sarah Fletcher tossed a two-hitter to spur Sparta to a 5-0 shutout over Wallkill Valley. Fletcher whiffed nine and allowed only two walks in raising her record to 7-2. Pope John blanked Lenape Valley 3-0 as Dana Inez keyed the win, allowing two hits, striking out 13 and walking only one. Kristen Carter and Michelle Kent both went 2 for 3 while driving in a run. High Point rolled to a 9-3 win over Kittatinny as Mikayla Wingle, who homered, knocked in three runs and scored three times. Ashley Aments went 2 for 4, driving in a run and scoring twice While Morgan Bell was the winning pitcher.

Romano blanks Lady Highlanders

Stephanie Romano hurled a four-hitter, striking out one, as Wallkill Valley blanked West Milford 5-0 in a non-league softball encounter on Tuesday. Jackie Cuomo doubled in a pair of runs while Stacey Kerstner delivered an RBI double as the Lady Rangers upped their overall record to 6-4. Any Baxter powered Vernon to a 15-5 rout of Butler in a non-league game that was halted in the bottom of the fifth by the 10-run mercy rule. Baxter doubled twice and legged out a three-bagger in four official at bats, knocking in three runs and scoring three times. Alyssa Hazinski doubled and singled on two appearances, scoring three times while Christine Clouser and Amanda Malkin both doubled for Vernon. Sara Stocklinski tossed a one-hitter, fanning six and walking one, as Kittatinny edged High Point 2-0 to improve to 10-1. Stocklinski doubled while Abby Ralph legged out a triple. Sussex Tech toppled Morristown-Beard 11-1 in a game halted in the bottom of the fifth by the 10-run mercy rule. Jess Gilman pitched all five innings, allowing four hits and striking out four as the Lady Mustangs evened their record at 4-4. Sophia Bosio singled twice in three at bats, scoring two times and plating a pair of teammates while Heather O'Brien went 2 for 2 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Sara Anlas collected two singles.

Ridge tosses shutout

Cassie Ridge went the distance, fanning 11 and scattering five singles, as Hopatcong blanked Vernon 7-0 in a SCIL softball game. It was the first "W" of the season for the Chiefs who had dropped four straight. Ridge aided her cause with a two-run single while Amanda Baker doubled in three runs and singled twice in four official plate appearances. Dana Inez tossed a shutout, scattering four singles and whiffing seven, as Pope John posted a 10-0 rout of Newton. Jill Black went deep for the Lions while Amanda Kent singles twice in four at bats, plating three teammate. Jefferson rallied from a 7-3 deficit after two innings to vanquish Lenape Valley 10-7 after scoring four runs in the top of the seventh. Jess Rokoszak fueled the final surge, singling in two runs while Shannon Harrington homered for the Lady Falcons. Pope John defeated High Point 4-1 as Sarah Olsen went the route, striking out eight while allowing a single and two doubles as she upped her mound mark to 6-0. Heather O'Brien singled twice, knocked in three runs and scored three times to propel Sussex Tech to a 16-4 rout of Middlesex Tech/Perth Amboy. Candice Talmidge chipped in with a pair of singles and scored three runs while Jess Gillman went the distance, scattering four hits and fanning eight.

Baylea Sperring went the distance, allowing only one hit and whiffing seven as Sparta edged Hunterdon Central 1-0 in a non-league girls' softball game played in Flemington on Wednesday. Dani Koert plated Virginia Buechel with the only run of the contest in the top of the third. On Friday, Sparta edged Wallkill Valley 9-8. Sarah Fletcher, a sophomore southpaw, relieved in the third inning with the Lady Spartans trailing 8-0 and hurled five shutout innings, scattering two hits as she picked up the win. Tara Perez went 2 for 4, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Newton defeated Vernon 9-2 on Friday afternoon as senior Heather Harold, doubled, tripled and homered for the Braves. Two days earlier, Chelsea Homa scattered three hits and fanned 12 as Newton defeated East Stroudsburg North (PA) 7-2. Nicole Morelli went 3 for 3 while Erica Miller singled twice, knocking in two runs. Pope John blanked Lenape Valley 10-0 on Friday, highlighted by Megan Prettyman's bases-clearing double in the third. Dana Inez tossed a one-hitter, whiffing four and walking none as she picked up her second win in three decisions. On Wednesday, High Point defeated Lenape Valley 7-1 as Morgan Bell worked the first six innings, allowing one run and scattering five hits to pick up the win. Lauren Fasano singled twice in four official at bats, driving in two runs while Amanda Ashley and Becky Penhacker both legged out two-baggers.

Olsen tosses 0-hitter on opening day

Pope John got a jump start on the 2007 scholastic softball season as senior right hander Sarah Olsen tossed a no-hitter to propel the Lady Lions to a 10-0 rout of St. Mary/Rutherford in the opening ropund of the All-Groups Challenge contested in Park Ridge on Sunday. Olsen fanned nine and did not issue a walk but eight miscues by her teammates ended her dreams of a perfect game. Rachel Senatore, a sophomore left fielder, had a pair of hits in plating three runs. Megan Prettyman, a junior third sacker, knocked in two runs and Jillian Black picked up an RBI. Frank Canning, who began his 10th campaign at the helm, guided the Lady Lions to a 17-8 record last year and a fourth place finish in the SCIL. His roster includes is young but includes veterans Dina Inez, another senior hurler, joined by juniors Jill Black and Michelle Kent along with sophomores Lauren Hurley and Amanda Kent. Jefferson, which went 19-5, is coached by Ed Levens who is entering his 27th season. Five seniors, Liz Ashmann, Cori Becker, Teresa Espopsito, Jess Rozoczak and Ali Simons along with juniors Jade Atoria, Brittany Beckman, Becky Furman, Shannon Harrington and Alysa Rowan provide the experience that will keep the Lady Falcons in contention for another title. Sparta posted a 15-8 and returns senior veterans Virginia Buechel, Jaime Cresbaugh, Dani Koert, Tara Perez, Casey Roselle and Baylea Sperling. Add juniors Melissa Sullivan and Raleigh Sperring plus sophomores Courtney Bailey and Sarah Fletcher and coach Rick Poots eighth Lady Sparta should be tough to beat. Kittatinny went 18-4 a year ago for coach Heather Mate who is now in her fourth year at the helm. Seniors Alyssa Peera and Abby Ralph are joined by juniors Franny Gelly, Melissa LaCouture and Sara Stocklinsji along with sophomore Kate Muller. Ken Chlodnicki returns for his third season at Wallkill Valley after finishing 19-5 in 2006. Jackie Cuomo, Stacey Kerstner, Amanda Nann and Srephanie Romero plus juniors Selena Anor, Kara Buda, Brittany Speroni and Abby Tilton make the Lady Rangers a leading contender for the SCIL crown. Newton should improve on it 7-18 record of last season with a cast of veterans that includes seniors Ashley Gresik, Heather Harold, Heather Maguire, Erica Miller, Brooke Myers, Nicole Morelli, and Stephanie Nunziato. High Point went 13-10 and could be improved with senior Morgan Bell returning on the mound. Her supporting cast includes classmates Amanda Bellis, Michelle Morongeli and Mikayla Wingle along with juniors Lauren Fasano and Becky Penhaker as well as sophomore Jessica Fedor. Lenape Valley looks to bounce back from the Lady Patriots worst season (3-18) and will look to a trio of seniors, Amanda Creamer, Samantha Markferding and Shannon O'Brien, to lead the comeback. Three talented sophomores who will also help are Alli Ciuccheti, Lisa Duckles and Steffanie Secola. Vernon will be guided by first-year coach Kerry Ludeking whose roster includes five senior returnees in Christine Couser, Melissa LaCour, Jerrica Lavooy, Amanda Malkin and Chelsea Wagner along with junior veterans Kelsey DeJesus and Brittany Peterson plus sophomore Amy Baxter.
